Cardinals score 11 in first two innings off Marlins

JUPITER, Fla. Matt Carpenter walked twice in his only plate appearances in Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins. They came in just two innings as the Cardinals lambasted Marlins' opening-day starter Jose Urena for six runs in the first inning and tacked on five runs in the second off reliever Chris Massa to take an 11-0 lead entering the bottom of the second.

Former Marlin Marcell Ozuna, who had been just four for 28 with 13 strikeouts, doubled and singled in the first two innings. Hot-hitting Jose Martinez knocked in three runs in those innings with a double and a single and rookie Yairo Munoz had two run-scoring singles.

Carpenter, who had been serving as the designated hitter, was replaced by Luke Voit when his third turn at the plate came around in the second inning. Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez fanned two in his first inning but allowed a home run to Derek Dietrich in the second to cut the Cardinals' edge to 11-1.

Matt Carpenter, who hasn't played in an exhibition game yet as he has been tending to an ailing back, will be the designated hitter for the Cardinals on Tuesday as they face the Miami Marlins.

Carpenter, who will bat third in the lineup, did walk in his first at-bat in an intrasquad game on Sunday, prompting manager Mike Matheny to joke Tuesday morning, "That's more than a lot of the guys here."

Carlos Martinez, the Cardinals' first-day starter on March 29 in New York, will face Jose Urena, who will be the starter for the Marlins, who are 10-5-2 in the Grapefruit League standings. The Cardinals are 7-8-2.

Cardinals reliever Luke Gregerson, back from the White House where he joined his World Series champion Houston teammates on Monday, is progressing with his oblique injury to the point he can throw a bullpen session in the next couple of days, Matheny said.

Urena will hit for the Marlins but Martinez will not.
